Luciana Abait
On the Verge
Hilliard Art Museum, Lafayette, LA
through July 29, 2023
Luciana Abait: On the Verge features more than 20 recent artworks spanning photography, painting, sculpture, video installation and augmented reality that demonstrate the powerful visual language for which Abait is known. The exhibition, which premiered at Loyola Marymount University’s Laband Art Gallery.
“I find that Luciana’s depictions of our contemporary climate crisis are likewise overwhelming and invitational,” said Laband Art Gallery Director Karen Rapp, who curated the exhibition.“ Her palette is sometimes skewed neon and deliberately unnatural which causes an unsettling effect. But, at the same time, she renders her pictures with such intentionally beautiful surfaces and colors to remind us of what is at stake: her landscapes are figuratively pushing at the edge of planetary existence. It’s as if she’s urging us to step into the scene and do something good.

Gabby Giffords
a conversation on gun safety
Friday, October 18
“Since our founding in 2013, Giffords has helped write, pass, and enact legislation that is reducing gun violence and saving lives. Against fierce opposition, we have helped pass more than 290 new gun safety laws in 45 states and Washington, DC. In the last year alone, 27 states passed 67-gun safety bills – including strengthening background checks, banning bump stocks, enacting extreme risk laws, closing domestic violence loopholes, and more – making this one of the most momentous years in the history of the gun violence prevention movement. Now, more than ever, we must continue to push at the state and federal level and continue to reduce gun violence in our country.”

Chance Aesthetics
Clarence Morgan and Zack Wirsum shared interest in the language of abstraction is also the starting point for their different approaches. Complex systems of patterns, geometric relationships and layering of line are employed by both artists. While a “chance aesthetics “ or randomness and unpredictability, as Clarence Morgan writes about his work, demarcates how the works are both viewed and interpreted, the figures entangled in Zack Wirsum’s work open the possibility for free association within the specific visual cues of abstraction.
